Tangier's Kasbah to Host 2nd Mediterranean Encounters, Sept 24-27

The Kasbah of Tangier will host the second edition of the Tangier Mediterranean Encounters from September 24 to 27, 2026, organized by the Founoun Al Boughaz Foundation – Arts of the Strait, under the patronage of the Ministry of Youth, Culture and Communication and Tangier City Hall, a cultural gathering aimed at boosting the literary and artistic profile of the strait city.

Building on a literary tradition

This edition comes roughly a year after Tangier joined UNESCO's Creative Cities Network for literature in 2025, adding extra symbolic weight to the event. The first edition of the Encounters celebrated Tangier's literary heritage, a city that has drawn writers and artists from both shores of the Mediterranean throughout its history, including Paul Bowles, Tennessee Williams and Jean Genet, laying the groundwork for a cultural tradition the organizing foundation aims to establish annually through talks, discussions and artistic activities within the historic Kasbah walls.

Why it matters

The event carries particular weight for Tangier, which is betting on culture as a lever for tourism and international visibility, as the city continues to host numerous artistic events throughout the year and leverages its strategic position as a gateway between Africa and Europe.
