NASA has launched its new Nancy Grace Roman space telescope aboard a Falcon Heavy rocket, on a mission to map a new Atlas of the Universe and study dark matter and dark energy.

NASA launched its new "Nancy Grace Roman" space telescope on Sunday, August 30, 2026, aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from Launch Complex 39A at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, at 7:26 a.m. local time (11:26 GMT). The telescope is expected to take about 100 days to reach its final observation point, roughly 1.5 million kilometers from Earth, before beginning a vast sky survey aimed at drawing a new "Atlas of the Universe."

A project worth over $4 billion

Developed over more than a decade at a cost exceeding $4 billion, the observatory is named after American astronomer Nancy Grace Roman, nicknamed the "mother of Hubble" for her pivotal role in founding the United States' space astronomy program. Its field of view is more than 100 times larger than that of the Hubble Space Telescope, allowing it to scan vast areas of the sky at once, unlike the more precise James Webb Space Telescope, which focuses on narrower regions.

Hunting for dark matter and dark energy

A core part of Roman's mission is dedicated to studying dark matter and dark energy, which together make up about 95% of the universe's content even though their nature remains unknown. Using its infrared instruments, the telescope will observe light emitted by celestial objects billions of years ago, and will help discover thousands of exoplanets and tens of thousands of supernovae. Julie McEnery, the mission's project scientist, said at a press conference on Saturday that "the early expansion of the universe wasn't quite consistent with what our models predicted," adding that this could mean "our standard model of the universe is wrong," and that Roman will provide data precise enough to settle the question.

A massive trove of data, open to everyone

Roman's observations will complement those of the Vera C. Rubin Observatory in Chile and the European Space Agency's Euclid mission. Dave Content, the telescope's technical lead, said the volume of data transmitted daily would be far too large to download onto anyone's laptop, and that the data would be made available to scientists worldwide as well as the public. NASA hopes the wide-scale observations will lead to unexpected discoveries, with McEnery saying the most exciting findings could be "a surprise, something we couldn't have predicted, that opens up a whole new set of deeper questions."
