OCP North America, the U.S. arm of Morocco's OCP Group, announced a partnership project with CHS, the largest U.S. farmer-owned agricultural cooperative, to build and operate a new phosphate fertilizer plant within the Cornerstone Energy Park complex in Wagaman, Louisiana. The announcement comes at a time when the United States is seeking to boost its domestic production of phosphate fertilizers after relying heavily on imports. # # The volume of investment and production capacity can reach the volume of investment in The project is expected to reach $450 million, while the production capacity of the new unit is expected to reach more than one million tons of phosphate fertilizers annually. According to the partners, this will be the first unit of its kind to be built in the United States since 1984. Under the agreement, OCP Group will provide the necessary phosphoric acid for production based on its experience in this field, while OCP North America and CHS will market the final product through their distribution networks that serve farmers, cooperatives and distributors # # Context of the deal: A first shipment and a temporary hike in compensation fees This announcement comes after the arrival of the first shipment of Moroccan phosphate fertilizers to the port of New Orleans, amounting to about 54,000 tons of "Triple Super Phosphate", after the US administration temporarily suspended the compensatory fees imposed on phosphate fertilizers coming from Morocco. Kevin Kim, CEO of OCP North America, stated that the project "represents a major step in the company's commitment to serving American agriculture," while Jay Debertin, chief executive of the CHS, said the timing was “particularly important for American agriculture.” # # Why does this investment matter? The United States currently imports about 40% of its phosphate fertilizer needs, according to the data of the two partners, which makes the project a step towards reducing this dependence and bringing production closer to American farmers. The two parties applied to benefit from the US Department of Agriculture's fields program to support local fertilizer production investments, noting that the project is still subject to obtaining the usual regulatory and funding approvals. For OCP Group, this project represents a new milestone in enhancing its international presence and location near major agricultural markets.
