Tangier-Tetouan Council: 40 million dirhams underwater city in Al-Middiq
The Council of the Region of Tangier-Tetouan-AlHoceima approved the "Underwater City" project in Al Middik at a cost of 40 million dirhams, to develop diving tourism on the Mediterranean coast.
The Regional Council of Tangier-Tetouan-AlHoceima, during its ordinary session held on October 5, 2026, approved a partnership agreement for the establishment of an "underwater city" in the city of Al Madaq, which is affiliated with Al Madaq-Al-Fenidak Labor, at a total cost of 40 million dirhams. The project comes within the framework of developing tourist diving activities on the Mediterranean coast of Morocco, and diversifying the tourist offer in the region away from traditional beach tourism. The project will be financed equally between the Regional Council of Tangier-Tetouan-AlHoceima and the Ministry. 20 million dirhams, and the Ministry of National Education, Primary Education and Sports, which will contribute a similar amount, with funding to be extended over the fiscal years 2027 and 2028. According to the agreement, the construction works will take about 18 months after the signing of the first deal for the works, the date of which has not yet been announced. A leadership committee, chaired by the Al-Madik Al-Fanaidaq laborworker, will oversee the tracking of project implementation. The project is betting on turning Al-Madiq into a destination for hosting national and international events in diving sports, and supporting the local economy The announcement comes at a time when the tourism sector in Morocco is witnessing continuous growth, as the country received 15.7 million tourists by September 2026, an increase of 5% . In the same direction, the neighboring city of Tangier recently witnessed the announcement of a new Four Seasons resort on Cap Malabata , in a sign of increasing tourism investments in the North Coast.
