Exports of Moroccan lemons to Spain jumped unexpectedly during the current season, reaching about 1,600 tons between October 2025 and July 2026, compared to only about 160 tons in the previous campaign, an increase of nearly ten times. This amount, according to official Spanish data analyzed by the platform "East Fruit" specialized in fruit and vegetable markets, exceeded the total of nine previous export campaigns combined, while its value amounted to more than 2 million euros, equivalent to about 22 million dirhams. Why did Moroccan exports jump? According to the analysis of East Fruit, the Spanish agricultural sector faced exceptional difficulties during the 2025-2026 season, as the lemon crop in Spain fell by 18.6% compared to last season, and by 36% compared to the 2023-2024 season. This decline in Spanish domestic supply drove up prices, prompting Spanish importers to turn to external suppliers, including Morocco, to make up the shortfall. Season figures and Morocco ranking The month of April 2026 witnessed the highest level of Moroccan exports, recording 590 tons in One month, almost a third of Spain's lemon imports during that period, while Morocco's main exports ran between November 2025 and June 2026. With this result, Morocco surpassed both the United Kingdom and France in terms of quantity, becoming the largest European customer of Moroccan lemons. However, Morocco remains well behind Spain's main suppliers from outside the continent, namely South Africa, Argentina, Brazil, Chile and Peru, along with the Netherlands and Portugal among the European suppliers. What Do you mean this for the next season? Data from East Fruit shows that Spain's total lemon imports during the first 10 months of the campaign already surpassed last season's entire total, and the full season could hit its highest level in five years. However, the continuation of this momentum for Moroccan exports remains contingent on the development of the crop and prices in Spain itself; if Spanish production returns to normal levels in the coming seasons, the Spanish market's need for these additional quantities may decline From the outside, this season, in the meantime, remains a remarkable turning point in the presence of Moroccan lemons in a European market that has been dependent for years on suppliers from other continents.
