CAF draw: Raja face Al Ahly, Berkane in tough group
Morocco's four continental clubs know their group-stage rivals: Raja face Al Ahly, AS FAR get an easier draw, and RS Berkane and MAS land in tough CAF Champions League groups.
The four Moroccan clubs competing in African club football now know their group-stage opponents, after the draw held Wednesday morning in Cairo by the Confederation of African Football (CAF). Raja Club Athletic landed in the group of Egyptian giant Al Ahly, coached by Moroccan Houcine Ammouta, while AS FAR received what is seen as a more manageable draw in the CAF Confederation Cup. Meanwhile, RS Berkane and MAS were handed two groups described as tough tests in the CAF Champions League.
CAF Confederation Cup: Raja face Al Ahly, AS FAR spared
Raja will play in Group A alongside Al Ahly of Cairo, ASKO de Kara (Togo) and Primeiro de Agosto (Angola). The clash with Al Ahly, led by Houcine Ammouta — the first Moroccan coach in the Egyptian club's history — gives the group a special edge. AS FAR, meanwhile, will play in Group B against Azam FC (Tanzania), Al Ahli Tripoli (Libya) and Durban City FC (South Africa), a draw seen as lighter than Raja's.
CAF Champions League: Berkane and MAS in tough groups
In the CAF Champions League, RS Berkane was drawn into Group C alongside Orlando Pirates (South Africa), coached by Moroccan Abdeslam Ouaddou, as well as Simba SC (Tanzania) and Colombe Sportive du Dja et Lobo (Cameroon). MAS, recently qualified for the group stage, landed in Group D against Pyramids FC (Egypt), the reigning 2025 African champion, Al Hilal (Sudan) and Horoya AC (Guinea).
Orlando Pirates, Berkane's opponent, and Pyramids, MAS's opponent, both rank among the continent's heavyweights, making the quarter-final push harder for both Moroccan sides.
