Dutch club Ajax Amsterdam has announced the signing of Morocco international midfielder Sofyan Amrabat, after his contract with Turkish side Fenerbahçe Istanbul was terminated. The new deal signed by the "Atlas Lion" with the Dutch club runs for two seasons, marking his return to Dutch football after nine years away from the league.
A Return to His Dutch Roots
Amrabat began his career in FC Utrecht's academy before moving to Feyenoord Rotterdam, where he emerged as one of the most promising young talents in Dutch football. He then left Northern Europe for Italy, playing for Hellas Verona and later Fiorentina, before a brief loan spell at Manchester United in England, a move to Real Betis in Spain, and finally Fenerbahçe in Turkey, the club with which he terminated his contract this summer.
Although Real Betis coach Manuel Pellegrini had expressed hope of keeping the midfielder for another season, Amrabat opted for a fresh challenge at Ajax instead.

Amrabat has been regarded as one of the world's best defensive midfielders since his standout performance with Morocco's national team at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, where he helped the "Atlas Lions" reach the semi-finals — a historic achievement for an African and Arab team. In Amsterdam, he will join young Moroccan talent Abdellah Ouazzane, forming a notable Moroccan presence at Ajax, the club where Hakim Ziyech and Noussair Mazraoui launched their rise to the top of European football.
The move comes amid a busy summer transfer window for Moroccan players, with observers also closely watching the possible transfer of Ayoub Bouaddi to Manchester City, a sign of the growing presence of Moroccan players at Europe's biggest clubs.
