Morocco leads AI export with exports exceeding 5%
Morocco, along with Tunisia, leads the export of high-tech products and artificial intelligence among the region's oil-importing economies, with more than 5% of its manufactured exports, a World Bank report revealed.
In its periodic report "MENAAP Economic Update" issued in October 2026, the World Bank revealed that Morocco has become one of the most prominent exporters of advanced technological products among the oil-importing developing economies in the Middle East and North Africa region, in conjunction with Tunisia. The report notes that this rise is especially linked to products related to artificial intelligence, of which the Kingdom has become one of the most prominent regional exporters. Numbers: Where does Morocco stand? Exports with a high technological component currently account for more than 5% of Morocco's manufactured exports, ahead of Egypt and Pakistan, but it remains behind Tunisia, which exceeds 7%. This progress comes in the context of a general rise in the weight of high-tech exports within the region's oil-importing economies. Percentage of high technological exports from manufactured exports (World Bank data) Economy Ratio Tunisia More than 7% Morocco More than 5% Average oil-importing economies of the region (2024) About 3.5% Average oil-importing economies of the region (2012) Less than 2% AI at the heart of the rise The World Bank explicitly notes that Morocco and Tunisia have become two of the largest exporters of AI-related products in the region, in a development that reflects a gradual transition towards more knowledge-based activities and growing participation in global technology value chains, especially in the digital products and AI sectors. However, the report makes it clear that this export superiority does not mean that Morocco dominates the regional system of artificial intelligence as a whole, as the disciplines differ between countries Region: While Morocco and Tunisia excel in the export of AI products, Saudi Arabia and the UAE focus their investments in digital infrastructure and data centers, which are the only economies in the region among the top 25 countries globally in both AI model development and supercomputing capabilities. What does this mean for Morocco? This ranking places Morocco in an advanced position compared to the regional average, which remains below the level of Moroccan exports despite its doubling in 12 years. This data reflects, according to the bank International, a structural shift in the non-oil economies of the region towards greater integration into global technology production chains, which presents Morocco with an opportunity to strengthen its position as a regional industrial-technological destination, along with the challenges of maintaining this progress in the face of rising competition from other economies in the region and beyond.
