Marjane opens 45th hypermarket in Dakhla for 260M DH
Marjane has opened its 45th national hypermarket in Dakhla, part of a two-phase project worth 260 million dirhams that will create over 500 jobs.
The Marjane group opened, last Saturday, its 45th hypermarket nationwide in the city of Dakhla, a new step in its expansion into Morocco's southern provinces, timed with Unity Day celebrations. The opening is part of a two-phase project with a total investment of 260 million dirhams, expected to create more than 500 direct and indirect jobs once the project is fully completed.
A two-phase project
The first phase, already operational, comprises the hypermarket, whose sales area covers 4,500 square meters, not counting the shops in the adjoining commercial gallery. The second phase consists of an open-air retail park of more than 12,000 square meters, which will host restaurants and cafés overlooking the Dakhla lagoon.
| Phase | Area | Investment | Jobs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hypermarket (operational) | 4,500 m² | 180 million DH | Over 200 |
| Retail park (under construction) | Over 12,000 m² | 80 million DH | About 300 |
Marjane's Deputy Managing Director in charge of hypermarkets said the opening reflects the group's ambition to "contribute concretely to the city's appeal," noting that the store offers more than 30,000 permanent and seasonal products, alongside discounts of up to 80% on products nearing their expiry date as part of the group's policy against food waste. Dakhla becomes the third city in the southern provinces to host a Marjane hypermarket, after Guelmim in 2014 and Laâyoune in 2024.
Local partnerships and economic impact
Marjane plans to form partnerships with local players in Dakhla, including boat owners, cooperatives, and producers of meat, milk and dairy products, to boost the marketing of regional products through new distribution channels rather than traditional markets alone. This expansion comes as Morocco, according to recent indicators, climbs to 4th place in Africa for investment attractiveness.
On sustainability, the group plans to power the Dakhla store with solar energy by 2027, joining 22 Marjane hypermarkets already using this technology nationwide. The store will also adopt reusable crates for transporting fruit and vegetables, a measure the group says could avoid the use of 2,000 to 3,000 tonnes of cardboard packaging per year.
