Morocco's House of Representatives Speaker Ahmed Touizi announced on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, during a plenary session, the names of the heads of the chamber's nine parliamentary groups and groupings, after the presidency received the official lists submitted by the parties. The new line-up marks a first in the chamber's history, with three women now leading parliamentary groups, while the National Rally of Independents (RNI), which led the previous governing coalition, chose to sit in opposition.

Who are the nine group leaders?

The PAM leads with 97 seats under Hicham Sabiri, who succeeded Touizi at the head of the group after the latter's election as Speaker. The RNI follows with 66 seats under Yassine Oukacha, ahead of the Istiqlal Party for Unity and Egalitarianism (65 seats), led by Madiha Khayir.

RNI moves to the opposition

The RNI's choice to sit in opposition marks a notable shift, as the party led the governing coalition under Aziz Akhannouch during the previous legislature. The move follows the formation of the new government led by Fatima Ezzahra El Mansouri, made up of four parties and 210 MPs, which does not include the RNI. The party joins the opposition alongside the PJD, led by Driss El Azami El Idrissi, the Popular Movement, led by Rime Chabat, and the Left Alliance grouping, led by Nabila Jalal.

Three women lead groups for the first time

Beyond the political realignment, this round of appointments marks a first in the chamber's history: three women now simultaneously lead parliamentary groups or groupings — Madiha Khayir for Istiqlal, Rime Chabat for the Popular Movement group, and Nabila Jalal for the Left Alliance grouping.

A step in completing the chamber's structures

The naming of group leaders comes a day after Ahmed Touizi was elected Speaker with 220 votes out of 369, and after the chamber's bureau and standing committee chairs were distributed. The chamber is thus nearing the end of the organizational phase of the new legislature, ahead of legislative work on files awaited by the new government, chief among them purchasing power and the upcoming budget.
