The city of Settat is currently hosting construction of the largest viaduct ever built for Morocco's Al Boraq high-speed train, measuring 1,400 meters and costing an estimated 900 million dirhams. The structure is part of the civil works for the Kénitra-Marrakech high-speed line extension, designed for speeds of up to 350 km/h.

Massive engineering specifications

The viaduct rests on 29 reinforced-concrete piers spaced about 50 meters apart, forming 28 spans. Its height ranges from 6 to 36 meters depending on the terrain it crosses. Building it requires 7,700 tonnes of steel structures and 62,500 cubic meters of reinforced concrete, along with piles totaling 9.5 km in length driven into the ground.

A 430 km line between Tangier and Marrakech

The Settat site is part of the wider plan to extend the high-speed network over 430 km between Tangier and Marrakech, via Kénitra, Rabat and Casablanca. Transport and Logistics Minister Abdessamad Kayouh announced that progress stood at 30% as of 25 May 2026, with official delivery planned for September 2029. The total cost of this segment of the programme is close to 53 billion dirhams, excluding rolling stock, and covers bridges, tunnels and signalling equipment.

A total investment of 96 billion dirhams

The project is part of overall investments of 96 billion dirhams in the rail sector, including 29 billion dirhams for 168 new-generation trains and 14 billion dirhams to modernize and maintain the existing network. King Mohammed VI officially launched the project.

Ahead of the 2030 World Cup

The high-speed line extension is part of preparations to host the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-organize with Spain and Portugal. Morocco is counting on the high-speed train to cut travel time between Casablanca and Marrakech, strengthen connectivity between the north and south of the kingdom, and absorb the growing number of travelers in the coming years.
